Codice Fiscale — how to request it at the Agenzia delle Entrate

The codice fiscale is a 16-character alphanumeric code issued free of charge by the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate). It identifies you in every interaction with the Italian administration — you need it for the Residence Permit, bank account, rental contract, phone SIM, SSN.

Last updated: May 2026. Procedure for non-EU students who are not yet residents.

Recommended: request the codice fiscale before leaving home, at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country. It saves time on arrival. Otherwise, request it in Italy at the Agenzia delle Entrate (procedure below).

02Filling in form AA4/8

The form has several sections. Only fill the ones listed below, in CAPITAL LETTERS, with a black pen.

Request type (top section)

Check the box "Attribuzione codice fiscale". Leave the other options empty (data update, duplicate card, etc.) — those are for people who already hold the code.

Quadro A — Personal data

Quadro B — Residence

Quadro C — Fiscal domicile (usually same as residence)

Check "Coincide con la residenza anagrafica". If different, enter the second address.

Signature

Sign by hand at the bottom right of the form. The signature must be identical to the one on your passport.

03Where and how to file it

Three options:

  1. At the Italian Consulate in your country, before departure — most convenient option.
  2. In person at the Agenzia delle Entrate — Provincial Directorate (DP). Appointment required (book via CUP-online or by phone); bring form + passport, code issued the same day (~30 min).
  3. By PEC certified email — send the hand-signed AA4/8 (scanned PDF) + passport PDF to the PEC of the Provincial Directorate serving your city. Reply with codice fiscale as PDF within 5–10 business days.
Important update. The legacy address cf_modulo.[provincia]@agenziaentrate.it is no longer the official channel. Use the PEC addresses below.
